I know, I know, getting rid of your easy option for seemingly more work doesn’t sound ideal. But keep reading to find out why double cleansing is definitely worth it!
Makeup wipes remove the makeup on the surface of your skin but don’t remove the makeup that’s buried in your pores. When you cleanse using a wipe and then move on to your normal skincare routine, well, your skin can’t properly absorb any of that awesomeness you’re adding.
Not to mention that makeup wipes are expensive, abrasive, and horrible for the environment. When you rub your face down with a makeup wipe you run the risk of over-exfoliating and introducing your skin to micro-tears, which can be aging in the long run.
Most wipes also aren’t biodegradable and end up sitting in landfills long after you’re done with them. The fibers they’re made of may break down eventually. But they never actually go away as they break down into microplastics which play a part in pollution and harming ecosystems.
So, you’ve stopped using makeup wipes, now what?
Double cleansing is a method of cleansing your face twice. The first time is to get the makeup or other residue off. The second is to actually cleanse your skin. It’s not as simple as just using your cleanser twice though.
To double cleanse, you want to start with a cleansing oil or balm which breaks up your makeup and washes clean with water. There are options for all skin types and they will even remove your waterproof makeup.
After your first cleanse, you can wash as normal with your typical water-based cleanser. This removes any remaining makeup, leaves your skin feeling refreshed, truly clean, and ready to absorb your skincare.
Double cleansing is great for dry skin, too. By using a cleansing oil or balm first, you gently remove any makeup, sunscreen, or pollution hanging out on your skin without drying it out.
For your second cleanse, opt for something gently exfoliating or super moisturizing (or a combination) to remove flakes and keep your skin hydrated.
It’s recommended to double cleanse once at the end of the day to remove all the daily residue from your skin. You don’t want to over-cleanse, so in the morning, you can refresh your skin with a quick rinse and a hydrating toner.
And that, friends, is all you need to know to start double cleansing. It leaves your skin cleaner than ever and totally glowing. It’s a routine that’s definitely worth ditching the makeup wipes for. And for a great oil-based natural cleanser, check out our organic soaps
