Why Olive Oil is the ‘O.G.’ Clean Beauty Ingredient

olive tree at dusk - olive oil history

Olive oil is not only a kitchen staple but a beauty essential, too. It is obtained through the cold pressing of whole olives, which yields pure Extra Virgin Olive Oil, EVOO. The high amounts of monounsaturated and omega-3 fats found in this oil, along with vitamins and antioxidants, make it very desirable as an ingredient in beauty products.

But, these benefits were not newly discovered by any means. This precious liquid is truly the ‘O.G.’ clean beauty ingredient, with a long history of health-based uses that go back thousands of years.

Brief History of this Clean Beauty Staple

Olive oil originated from the Mediterranean region. However, its importance was more pronounced in Ancient Greece – where the first olive plantations are thought to have been cultivated around 5,000 years ago.

Greeks revered the oil, which they used for their religious rituals and personal hygiene. Their doctors considered it useful medicine. Warriors and Olympians showered with it. Roman kings were anointed with the oil. And the Egyptians used it for skin purification.

Olive oil has stood for beauty, opulence, peace, and robustness throughout history. And that’s why we love it as the primary ingredient in our castile soap.

Top Benefits of Olive Oil

  • Cleansing Agent: Due to its mild, yet effective cleaning properties, it is an ideal ingredient for cleansing products and allows for versatility.
  • Antioxidant: Olive oil contains antioxidants that hinder the cellular damage that’s often caused by free radical molecules.
  • Moisture Sealant: This is a great oil for dry skin because of its moisturizing attribute. It reduces water loss and increases your skin’s water content.

Common Uses for this Ancient Oil

  • Makeup Remover: Trust this oil to break down waxy substances found in such makeup as eyeliner and mascara. It will also lift and move oil-soluble makeup residues from your skin.
  • Moisturizer: As a powerful moisturizer, olive oil deeply hydrates the skin and adds in vitamin E. This helps to form a protective barrier to your skin.
  • Hair Treatment: A weekly application is sufficient for intensive hair treatment. Massage ½ a cup of this precious oil into your dry hair and after combing through, put on a shower cap. Leave it for three to six hours, or preferably overnight.  Shampoo out after for super shiny hair.
  • Cuticle Oil: A few drops will get your fingers and nails back in shape after washing or when it’s cold. Apply a few drops to your hand and lightly massage it in.
